I came across this video through a friend a few days ago, and I am convinced that this is was very apt now that school resumes today. Most apt. Well, enjoy the speech by Sir Ken Robinson. He makes a whole lot of sense.
PS. There is the option of subtitles for the video, for those who don’t do well with spoken British English.

Every (would be) parent should listen to this…There’s a way a curriculum restricts creativity. Not that school is bad entirely but people should at times be left alone to explore their creativity. School/education isn’t the only route to fulfillment in life. A friend once told me about his son’s examination question–‘What causes traffic?’ Options a) Bad roads b) Policemen c) Traffic lights d) Dust (Not exact options). The boy picked option ‘b’ but according to the teacher ‘a’ was the right answer. To the young mind it wasn’t wrong, for obvious reasons. Just like this, there isn’t one answer to a question; and the school does not have it all. Bringing it down to the Nigerian academic environment is even more pathetic, there’s just this subtle reality–if you want to be a good student please the lecturer, know what s/he wants and give it to them. That done you may finish with a first class and in turn get one of the best jobs (there are exceptions!). It’s just pathetic how an institution made to nurture stunts!

I will not totally support this. I think it is all about the way the syllabus is coined. I know that one of the essence of setting up vocational schools/institutions is to see how the creative potentials of the student are tapped and developed. And, it is good for one to be literate no matter how creative you may be.
Creativity? Yes.
Education killing creativity? Not completely so. Rather, to alarge extent, education help prepare one’s creative horizone for unleashment.
