I’m in the University town of Ilorin, having the time of my life in the midst of old friends that I last saw in Ibadan years ago. Right now, we are watching the Uruguay-Germany game at a bar. Paul the German Octopus has predicted that Germany would win, but right now, Uruguay is leading with two goals to one. I wonder how this would end. Something tells me that we might see an Octopus peppersoup dish by this time tomorrow.
I have been to the University of Ilorin. I went there today for the very first time. We tried to see the dam which was not far from the gate but we were turned back by the security folks who said they were acting on instructions of the Vice-Chancellor. Why five young men might be a threat to a University dam is still beyond my comprehension, but I was able to at least get some shots. The University is a nice place. Far more beautiful than the Adekunle Ajasin University at Akungba Akoko. But I had a very nice time in the house of the Dean of the Faculty of Arts of the AAU. He has a nice family too.
I have left the German and Taiwanese linguists from SOAS behind in Ikare where we last parted. They will be proceeding to a village called Ikakumo, and later Ayere later in the week. I on the other hand will move on towards Kaduna, and wherever else until I get broke, bored or disinterested. Right now, everything is going well. I’ve had moin-moin, ponmo and some drinks. And right as I’m typing this, Germany has equalized, and the scores is 2-2.
I’d better get back to watching the game before I miss all the action. Of course, there are many photos to share. Greetings from the Nigerian countryside. How have you been?

Thank you Modupe for the Welcome.
Bigger? I don’t know, since I don’t know the extent of the campus’s fences. Surely it looked quite impressive. So you’re in Ilorin. Cool. I like your town. It looks far more organized than Ibadan, and far cleaner too. Residents who have moved here from other places don’t seem to like it though. They think it’s too dull.
Unfortunately, I won’t be coming to campus again soon. Do you live on campus? Are you a student? Maybe I’ll run into you one of these days before I take off again.

I am glad to see this upload, I have an attachment to the University of ilorin in someways, I actually started my post secondary education in the University before the ASUU crisis of 2000 got my dream terminated, anyway it afforded me the rare chance to recourse to Ibadan (the first and the best?).
Ilorin holds a similar feat like Birmingham (UK), an interface of cultural and geopolitical boundary sharing… and it will be nice to meet different ethnic representations in Ilorin….and if I am this correct, Ilorin (Kwara) has the highest number of heterogenous indiginous languages (Yoruba, fufude, barutin, fulani, igbomina, ekiti, tapa, e.t.c)
a relatively slow moving town…i loved the savanah spread of vegetation that earth the ancient town….
and the picture of the water-works dam that you uploaded (here) is a respite for me… I could remember that there probrems with water supply on campus of the university (during my short stay there), at least there is comfort now.
but some questions are left unresolved about the university… the ilorinization of the university, which is a denial of the federal ownership of the school, and some other ethno-religious sentiments lurking around the university….
Olu Obafemi, Taiwo Oloruntoba-Oju, Bayo Ogunjimi (late) formed a strong foundation for literature and arts in the university….
Kolawole, thanks for this upload, I wish you a successful tour of our dear country, go upnorth through Jebba, Mokwua, Kotangora….and you will meet levely scenes on your way….
Ibukun,
Wolverhampton, UK.

I’ll say I like the scenery on the way in and out. I used to think that Ife had the most beautiful. Now, I give it to Ilorin.

I’m so annoyed Germany won. I hate that stupid octopus!
Great to hear you are having fun on your travels, though. 🙂

Sorry, the Octopus seems to get it right much of the time. Very soon, they might start asking him for winners of Presidential and Parliamentary elections. Haha.
